Culturing Rotifers sounds like a daunting task, but, following our basic steps will ensure that you keep a healthy culture and always have live food to feed your closed loop system, with a constant supply of fresh, live lower order food supply.
Your corals require light for good health; however, adding fresh sources of Phytoplankton and Zooplankton to your reef system ensures an abundant micro ecosystem, as a healthy food source, which supports the macro ecosystem (pods, inverts, corals and carnivorous fish). Getting this balance right has numerous benefits for our closed system aquariums.
Fresh Live Phytoplankton is beneficial for all filter feeders, soft corals, Clams, Sponges, Feather duster worms.Live Phytoplankton Nannochloropsis contains large amounts of: Omega 3 Highly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (HUFAs) EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) This will also benefit the aquarium and inhabitants by feeding and encouraging the growth and reproduction of natural fauna such as copeopods, amphiopods, mysids, rotifers, worms, filter feeders and beneficial bacteria, which will help by improving water clarity and quality consuming waste products and in turn increasing the quantity of natural food available in a system.
Rotifers are the first food you will need to feed your newly hatched clownfish.
Fish species like the Dragonets are extremely difficult to be fed frozen foods, so always ensure your live pod culture is abundant. By adding Phytoplankton and Zooplankton you are providing the required nutrition in order for your pod population to thrive.
To keep this as simple as possible, there are many animals in a typical reef that require Phytoplankton and Zooplankton to survive. Also, there are many other organisms that will benefit from the use of Phytoplankton.
